  Bramble is a stubborn young hedgehog who climbs onto rooftops every clear night to visit the moon. One evening he arrives and discovers the moon is a paper lantern, strung by a lamplighter. Bramble visits anyway. They become friends.

  A magpie has been stealing buttons from every coat on Thorn Lane. The children lay a trap with a very shiny button and catch the magpie red-beaked. It turns out she is building a nest for her chicks. The children help her finish it.

  Mrs. Teacake's vegetables hum when they ripen, carrots, beets, turnips, each in its own key. The whole town comes out to try to hear the song, but only the children ever can. This is not an accident.

  A lighthouse stands in the forest at the end of the old Post Road, where no ocean ever was. The children of Pinewood walk toward it every year on a clear evening. The light is always on. No one has ever been inside.

  Oliver and the Postman's Whistle

  The Pinewood postman is so sleepy he sometimes forgets to whistle. Oliver, age eight, borrows the whistle for one day and keeps the entire town running on schedule. He returns it that evening, with a cup of tea for the postman and a long list of corrections.
